"You really need a roommate"

5 words that changed everything for me, and considering the person who said it, made it all the more terrific and scary and just genuinely surreal. My ex wife Jennifer and I took a couple of years to get past the anger, fighting and cheap shots to become friends again. We were dressed and Jennifer hugged me and reminded me school starts on Tuesday and that Stephanie still needed a few school supplies. I smiled and she asked how the job was going and I said "The one you said for years didn't exist and I would never get?" She sighed and asked "Why are you starting in?" I saw it was almost 11 and sat down, edited my piece about digital games and submitted it and was in bed by 12 thinking about whether I wanted the headache of a roommate. Jen said "Ex-wife" and then repeated "Just friends, ex-wife". I introduced Stephanie and she looked up from her texting and smiled and said "She's pretty daddy". Kelly blushed and we realized we were still holding hands and she didn't let go. I asked when she would be able to talk about the store, the conversion, any of it and Kelly blushed some more and said "I'm free this afternoon". Jen stepped up and said "Sounds good, can he text you the address?" I asked Jennifer "What are you doing?"

She turned to face me and said "Helping you idiot". Jen said that I was looking for a roommate that would be considerate and understanding of Stephanie and Kelly stared at Jennifer like she had just confessed robbing a bank. Jen blinked and asked "Are you okay?" Kelly said "I... uh... I might be looking for... Really?" I said that I had a huge apartment and was fine by myself but ‘someone' thinks I need a roommate to talk to and hang out with". Kelly asked "Uh, why did you get divorced?" We said in unison "Money". Stephanie actually put her phone away and asked "Are you having dinner with me and daddy?" Kelly blushed and said "I... I guess" and Stephanie asked if we could go get her movie now. Jennifer snatched my keys out of my hand and went to the truck with Steph and Kelly seemed nervous and I said "It's okay, I understand..." and she interrupted me and touched my hand and said "I would like to come but..." she looked past me at Jennifer and asked "Is it... is it a date?" Now I blushed and said "I... um... do you want it to be?" Kelly squared her shoulders and said "You can do better than that" and she crossed her arms and waited.

I swallowed and asked if she would like to have dinner with me and my daughter and she smiled and said "Yes" and then we exchanged numbers and were talking about nothing when Jennifer honked the horn. I sighed and said "As you can see, I have to go". Kelly touched my hand and said "I'll see you when?" and I said I was home all day after I bought Steph her movie and then I smiled and said "Surprise me". Kelly was looking at me and I stepped closer and she blinked and then she blushed and said "I better get back" and she hurried into the store. I got into the truck and Jennifer stared at me and asked "Well?" I said "Honking the horn didn't help". I drove to Walmart and Jennifer went to look at candles and Steph practically dragged me back to the electronics department and put Insurgent and Hot Pursuit into the cart and then she went back to texting. My phone chimed and it was from Kelly and she said "Hi" and I said "Hello gorgeous". She didn't reply and I sent "You still there?" and she replied "Yes, but I'm still looking for gorgeous".

I said "I'm glad we met" and she asked "Should I bring anything?" I replied "Just you, that's all I want". She replied "Want?" and I blushed and tried to think of a reply and Jennifer came up and put some wax burner melts in the cart and asked Stephanie if she wanted to look at art supplies. I put my phone away because I didn't know what to say and then we went up and when I tried to pay for the wax melts Jennifer pressed against me and said "So you have a girlfriend now?" I said "I'm confused, if we're back together I'll call Kelly right now". Jen stepped back and said "No, we needed to be divorced, I was just teasing you". I said like always, I would enter the digital codes, and she could take the movies to either house, we didn't care. We drove to my apartment and I entered the codes and Steph was already watching Insurgent. Jen and I sat on the balcony and she said it was a nice apartment but I needed a roommate.

I sighed and said "Can you give it a rest?" She said "I think I'll go" and I pulled her to me and said "Sorry, I don't want to fight". She looked at me and said "Fine" and when I rubbed her ass she sighed and asked "Really?" She kissed me and said "You have a date" and then she slipped away from me and told Stephanie she was leaving. I went inside and hugged Jen and she said "Good luck, have fun, Kelly's cute". Stephanie paused her movie and asked if she could play Borderlands and I said "You know you don't have to ask". Jen reminded me she was going into DC on Sunday and I said "Have fun" and she gave me a look and whispered "Call me after your date". I grinned and raised my eyebrows and she sighed and said "Maybe". We hugged and she kissed me softly and then she left.

I played Borderlands 2 with Steph for a while and then made her eat lunch. I wrote an article about trading games, movies and cd's and how the trade industry took advantage with such low buy rates but sold pre owned so high. I submitted it and started to write about the KFC/ Starbucks conversion when there was a knock at my door. Stephanie paused and I answered it and almost didn't recognize Kelly standing there. Her long brown hair was back in a simple ponytail held in place by a purple scrunchie. She had on a pretty pink and white sleeveless dress then came to her knees and she wore a small watch and white flats. She looked beautiful and I smiled and said "You look beautiful" and she sort of half hugged me, half held me, then stepped back blushing.

Even though she already knew because she was leaning over the couch staring, I said "Stephanie, Kelly is here". Kelly stepped inside and handed Stephanie a small pink bag and Stephanie did me proud by accepting it, thanking her and then giving Kelly a hug. Stephanie went back to her game and ate some of the candy that was in it and said "Look daddy" and was waving and Amazon gift card. Kelly said "I saw her phone was android and assumed Amazon not iTunes?" I hugged Kelly and somehow we ended up holding hands as I said "You didn't have to do that". She said "So, can we discuss this text?" I took her out to the balcony and told Stephanie "No spying" and she sighed "Okay daddy". Kelly sat next to me and I said "I apologize, that's not what I meant and I didn't know how to reply". She looked at me seriously as I tried not to stare at her legs and she asked "So you don't want me?" I said "Kelly, there's no right answer to that question, we just met". I said I found her very attractive, liked her sense of humor, and really hoped to get to know her, so yes, I wanted her. She smiled and said "That answer works just fine, so show me the apartment you're trying to talk me into". I blinked at her and asked how could she move in if we were dating and she stood almost straight up and said "I didn't realize we were dating".

I sat there looking up at her and she smiled and said "This is going to be fun". I was still looking at her and she asked "Is that what you want? To date me?" I stared at her screaming for my brain to speak but Kelly sighed and said "Your wife did a number on you huh?" I stood and said "Ex-wife, and Yes" and Kelly took my hand and said "Same as dinner tonight, don't assume, ask". I showed her the apartment and she said she liked it as she looked at the third bedroom and said "Ok show me yours". I did and she said it looked nice but what was with all the purple. I showed her my Ravens lanyard and she sighed and said "Ok, makes sense". We were still holding hands and Kelly asked me if I was expecting to hear soon. I was confused and she laughed and said "The Congressional invitation that you apparently need to ask me out". I swallowed and said "I'm not good at this, would you uh... do you want to..." Kelly sighed and said "Yes" and she looked around the room and said "When do you want to do this?"

I don't even believe it, so I know you won't, but within a few hours with some help from my buddy Tim and her brother Kevin, we already had half Kelly's stuff in. We set up her bed and mounted her TV and took a break and she sat with me on the balcony with the plan to get more tomorrow because she was off. She had changed into jeans and a t-shirt, and now she was back in the pretty pink and white dress. She asked how we would handle the bills and I said that originally the plan was 50/50 but since we were dating maybe I would just pay everything and she could just help. Kelly asked me "What is this 1980?" That's how I found out she was 37 and sure didn't look it. She asked me about dinner and I said we could just pick something up and she checked to see Stephanie sitting on the couch texting and watching Hot Pursuit. Kelly slid the balcony door shut and asked "Do you want to sleep together?" I stared at he and she sighed and asked was I capable of making any decisions? I said "Please don't be rude Kelly, Jennifer second guessed me our entire marriage". Kelly apologized and said we both knew that we wanted it to happen, so why play games?

Kelly sat on my lap and asked could we start out in our own beds and see how we felt and I held her and said "Yes". Kelly got a look on her face and she said "I'm affectionate, I like to hold hands and kiss and snuggle, but I'm not easy, just to be clear". I said "In fairness, this did happen fast, I didn't expect a roommate or a girlfriend". Kelly kissed me softly and said "Now you have both" and I said "Stephanie has to come first" and Kelly nodded. She said she would go get dinner and asked me what I wanted, she was buying. We decided on Italian and Stephanie asked for chicken parm like she always does and Kelly asked Stephanie to go with her to get it. Steph looked at me and I nodded and she and Kelly went to get dinner. Oddly, Jennifer showed up and talked to me about school supplies for Stephanie and asked "Where is our daughter? I said she was with Kelly and Jennifer sighed and said "I see". I stopped to have a Pepsi and Jennifer is very bright and she asked "How long before you guys will be sleeping together?" I said "Please don't start baby?" Jen said "We slept together our first night and you were a gentleman for weeks" I sighed and said "Don't remind me, you had me hard all the time". She sighed and said it was worth the wait and I grinned and said "I guess". Jen narrowed her eyes and said she could make sure I never saw her naked again and I apologized. We were standing there staring at each other when Kelly and Stephanie came in and Steph said "Hi mommy".

Kelly said "Oh" and Jen said she just came to talk about school supplies and I said "Just use the Capital One card, I finally got it paid off". Kelly asked Jen if she wanted to stay, she bought plenty, and Jen laughed. Kelly shocked me when she stepped close to Jennifer and said "Look, this doesn't have to be awkward, I get it, you have history, now let me have a chance". Jen's eyes widened and she looked at me and I shrugged and she said "Uh, sure, what did you get?" Stephanie turned off the tv and we all sat and ate some of the best Italian take out I have ever had. Stephanie asked why she didn't get to go into DC on Sunday and Jen said "Well, because you're with daddy". Steph said "You let me stay with daddy whenever I want, can I go with you into DC?" Jen looked at me and I said "I have to help Kelly with her crap (she smacked me) so take Stephanie and I'll do something special with her Monday". Steph put her plate in the sink and she stood next to Kelly and said "I like you, I just want to go to DC with my mom". Kelly smiled and said "I'm not going anywhere, how about we go get our nails done this week?" Steph looked at Jen and she shrugged and said "You're 15, don't ask me". Steph hugged Kelly and said "Okay, see you Sunday?" I looked at Jen and she said "Apparently I have her tonight". Jen laughed and said "I wanted to see Hot Pursuit anyways". I started to clean up and Kelly literally brushed her body against mine and said "I got it". Jen shook her head and headed Stephanie get her stuff and then I hugged them both and they left. Kelly was washing dishes and I came behind her and held her and she looked up at me and I asked "Is this okay?"

She shut off the water, spun to face me and put her arms around my neck and said "I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to be, I'll tell you if something makes me uncomfortable". I kissed her softly and she parted her lips and sighed as the kiss went on. I was easing back and she looked at me as if to ask where I was going, so I kissed her again and she pulled me closer. I felt happy for the first time in a while and she parted and said if I let her finish cleaning up, we could watch some tv and snuggle. I checked my e-mail, made the correction my editor asked for and resubmitted my piece. There was a knock on the door and Kelly answered it and Jen and Stephanie came in with my kitty Halo. Halo jumped from Stephanie, rushed over to me and purred as she rubbed against my legs. I picked her up and now I was really happy because Halo was MY kitty. She purred and bumped my face with her head and then got down and started looking around and Jen said she wouldn't stop fighting with Callie. I said "Finally after 2 years you're letting me have Halo?" Jen sighed and said "Why is it never thank you?" She stormed out and Stephanie said "Love you daddy" and left.

Kelly said we would need a litter box, food and etcetera and I sighed and she said "Work on your assignment, I'll go to the store". I wrote down the type of food Halo prefers and she kissed me and left. I hammered out a story that was mostly conjecture but felt funny and submitted it and as if perfectly timed Kelly came in and saw Halo sitting on the table with me and the laptop. I carried the stuff in for her and pretended not to see the wax burner, cubes and a tablecloth in the bags. Kelly came out of the bathroom and shoved the trash from setting up the litter box into the trash can and set up the wax burner and I sighed. She smiled and asked "What?" I said "Just watching you". She smiled and asked if we could get into sweats and snuggle on the couch. I smiled and she closed my laptop and said "Pay attention to me now". We were kissing and she sighed and asked would this work with us being roommates and dating? I said when she was ready we could sleep together and use her room as storage and she said "That could work".

Halo didn't like the litter box in the bathroom and made sure I knew it, so I moved it to the kitchen and she was thrilled and showed me by getting up on the counter and cleaning herself. Kelly said "I think you like Halo more than me". I grinned and said "Halo loves me for me". Kelly said "Hmmm" and moved closer and said "Can Halo do this?" She kissed me and I sighed and held her as it was warm and soft and then she said "Go get comfortable, I'll meet you on the couch". Halo followed me like she always does and purred and told me her stories as I got changed and then she wanted me to pet her so I carried her to the couch. She was curled up on my lap purring and I was petting her when Kelly came out and said "What is it with you and that cat?" I said "Come over here and I'll pet you" and Kelly said "Sounds good, hang on". She had changed into tight gray sweatpants and a soft pink sweater and she brought us each a Pepsi and said "Sorry Halo" and moved her to the end of the couch. Halo filed her complaint and then went and got on the table and Kelly said "Lovely" and I laughed. I handed Kelly the remote and she surprised me by parting my legs, backing between them against me, and putting my hands around her waist.

She scrolled for a while and settled on HGTV and I laughed. She looked at me and asked "What?" I said "Nothing babe, it might make you mad". Kelly flicked off the TV and said "It was her favorite channel" and I sighed and said "Yes". Kelly said "I don't want to be a bitch, but I'm sitting here snuggled with you, not wearing a bra, and you're thinking about her?" I kissed Karen and said "I am most certainly thinking about you" and she sighed and said "Good" and said "We don't need TV right now anyways". She shifted around, pulled me down, and crawled atop me and we kissed. We were kissing when Halo jumped up on the couch right beside our faces and turned, sat down and started purring. Kelly laughed "Are you serious?" I said "You'll get used to it, she's my kitty". Kelly lay her head on my chest and said "You never mentioned I would be sharing you with a cat". I was staring at the perfect shape of Kelly's ass and sighed and she looked up and asked "What's wrong?"

I'm not sure why, but I said "I was just admiring your body". Kelly said "Oh uh... Thanks". I sighed and said "I can't wait to see it" and she laughed and said "Just put it right out there". I apologized and she reminded me that it would come in time, just be patient. I sighed and she laughed and said "Lord, what now" and I just said "First time I've been happy in years". Kelly shifted and kissed me softly and she sighed and said "That's how you get to see my body, saying things like that". We kissed for a while and then she realized I was getting hard and she was pressed right against it and she sighed and said "Wow". I said "Yeah, I like you, what can I say?" She said we both probably needed cold showers because I wasn't getting any tonight and I smiled at her and she said "Hell no, not on the first night, forget it". Her room was a disaster and I said "I like what you've done with the place" and she said "You know what, screw you". Again I grinned and she sighed and said "Get out".

I kissed her and she said "You try to take my clothes off tonight and it will be a month before you get any". On that cue Halo ran in and got on Kelly's bed and Kelly just smiled and said "Of course". I held Kelly and said "I am happy to be your boyfriend even though you are a smoking hot tease". She gasped and shoved me and said "What a jerk" but she was smiling. Kelly sighed and said "Move over Halo" and she slid under the covers and then asked me "What?" I said "You sleep dressed?" Kelly said "You don't?" I smiled and she said "Well then you and Halo go have fun, this girl is keeping her clothes on". Halo meowed and started grooming her tail and Kelly said "She is a cute kitty". She looked at me and asked "That smoking hot thing, was that for real?" I said "Hell yes, you're better looking than anyone I've ever dated, I keep expecting someone to pinch me". Kelly smiled and said "Fine, we can make out some more, but my clothes stay on Jack".

Halo left and we both stared at the door and Kelly laughed and then pulled me to her and we kissed. She moved to lay atop me and she said "Shit, are you still hard?" I said "Sorry" and she whispered "Why did she leave you?" I sighed and said "Everything is about money with her, it always was". Kelly kissed me and said "Anytime she upsets you or you think of her, think of me okay?" I kissed her and she said if we keep making out she would never get to sleep and I moved her off me and she said "What? I'm sorry?" I said "Babe, I'm not upset, but if we go too far then you're mad, I lose way more than I gain". Kelly looked at me like it was a trick and she asked "Are you for real?" I kissed her and said "I would rather have years with you than minutes" and she gasped. I said "I'm serious babe, goodnight".
