A Homecoming

The solider picked up the small child as he ran for cover. The sounds of mortar fire filled the air. An arid smoke assaulted nostrils while people scrambled and shouted over the noise. It was chaos for everyone there except for one. Samara trained her camera lens on this tender moment. The only thing she heard was the sound of the camera shutter as she took picture after picture of the child and solider. The boy cowered for protection behind his would be hero. Samara was lost in her world where nothing mattered but the images she captured. She was awakened from her trance by someone violently shaking her. "Please Ms. Samara get in the Jeep" spoke her guide Najeeb. "It is not safe here any longer." She waved him off impatiently while the camera rolled. More insistent now Najeeb didn't wait for an answer he simply swept Samara off her feet and forced her into the Jeep. The driver sped away while Samara hung off the back still determined to get the best shots she could.Soon the Jeep was pulling to a stop in front of the hotel that had become the temporary housing for Samara and other journalists from around the world. Najeeb quickly gathered her camera gear and headed for the lobby. Samara quickly followed while they headed to her room. "Ms. Samara you should not endanger yourself as you did today." Spoke Najeeb in his thick accent and broken English. Defending her position Samara quickly responded.
"It is my job to document what is going on here Najeeb. I appreciate your concerns for my safety but my work here is far too important not to take risks."
Najeeb didn't respond he knew any attempts he made to get her to see his point of view were futile. He simply hung his head and excused himself.
Samara didn't waste time and dragged her camera to her laptop. She quickly chose a few select shots and emailed them off to her editor back in the US. She waited patiently for the reply as she scanned through the latest pictures. Instead the satellite phone rang. Samara jumped quickly to her feet to answer the call. "Hello"
"Samara?"
"Yes its me." Samara was surprised to hear the voice of her boss Roger and the chief editor at the network where she worked. She knew that it had to be serious for him to call.
"You are to come home immediately. There have been some developments and you are no longer safe. Intelligence has uncovered a plot to go after members of the press. Your name has come up several times, so you have to get out now."
Samara was stunned at the news. She was not ready to go. She felt confused and angry that she was being made a target. She always prided herself on trying hard to cover both sides of any issue as unbiased of an opinion as there was out there. She only wanted to document the events for the sake of history and had no political agenda or ties. "When?" she groaned into the phone.
"Leave everything immediately, there is a black armored truck in front of the hotel. They will help you cross the border and once there you will be met by another man who will escort you to the airport. Do you understand?"
"Yes, but you can't expect me to just leave like this."
"Samara you get yourself downstairs and out that fucking door! Everything you have there can be replaced but we sure as hell can't replace you. Now go!"
The phone went dead and Samara peered around the room. If he thought she would just leave everything he was crazy. This was her work everything she cared about. She quickly gathered up her laptop and cameras and pushed them into bags. She opened the door and fled down the stairs. She was only down a floor when she met Najeeb on his way up. "Najeeb I have to go."
Najeeb gave her a puzzled look and asked. "Where you go?"
"Back to America" she said. Sadness welled up in her eyes but she wouldn't cry. This dirty little hotel had been her home for the past six months and Najeeb her only friend and confidant. Leaving him here was difficult. She didn't know what his culture would think or how Najeeb would take it but she quickly flung her arms around his neck. "I will never forget you. Thank you for everything."
"Ms. Samara I will miss you. You have been a good friend."
Samara fought back tears. "Be careful and stay safe."
"You too."
With that Samara unlocked her hold on Najeeb and headed down the stairs. Once outside she quickly found her escorts and was on her way though the streets. Nightfall would be on them soon and she hoped to be out of the city by then. The rest of the trip was a blur through security passes, safe houses and crowded streets. Now she found herself on board of a crowded plane waiting for take off. She closed her eyes and laid her head on the headrest. Finally safe she thought. For the first time in six months she felt like she could take a deep breath.
Soon the plane was in the air and Samara was glued to the window trying to take in everything she was leaving behind. The stewardess offered Samara some food and she was quick to accept. She ate the food quickly as if she hadn't eaten in weeks. She never thought airplane food could taste so good. She asked the stewardess for a glass of wine. She was tired but was finding it hard to settle down. Her mind kept racing over the events of the past few months. This was always hard on her; to just drop everything and everyone she had met. She was supposed to just pick up her old life like these past six months never happened. No one really knew what she went though. How even months from now she would still have dreams about the things she saw, things she would never forget. The wine coursed through her body and took the edge off the anxiety she was feeling.
Looking for a distraction she rummaged through her camera bag. She wasn't looking for anything in particular just looking to occupy herself. In the bottom she found a furry little companion. It was a small brown bear that was well loved and well worn. She thought of it as her good luck charm. She had had it for years and never took a trip without it. It had been won for her at a fair when she was much younger. She was not sure why she even kept it all this time; it just gave her a sense of comfort. She carefully tucked it back to its hiding spot in the bag and rummaged some more. Her hand settled on a stiff envelope. She pulled it open and read the delicate embossed invitation it contained. She reread the letter inside as well. It was from her baby sister Lindsey. She was asking Samara to please come home for her wedding and be her maid of honor.
Samara flipped the invitation over in her hand and thought about her home and her family. She had not been back home in seventeen years. She told her sister that she would stand at her wedding but suddenly she was having cold feet. She imagined herself in some horrible teal colored brides maid dress. Plus the thought of going home felt overwhelming. She had seen her family on numerous occasions over the years but never back home. They always met her as they passed through or she visited them when they were on vacation elsewhere. She had been to so many war torn countries over the years and a witness to countless atrocities but going home brought a sense of fear to her. She couldn't make sense of it because she had nothing but wonderful memories of home. She tucked the invitation back into her bag and settled in: finally sleep over took her.
*******************************************************************
Samara unlocked the door and pushed her way inside. Once over the threshold she let her heavy bags fall to the floor. The apartment was dark and dreary with meager furnishings if anything the furniture was that of a university student and not that of a successful adult. Samara couldn't be bothered with making this apartment homelike and comfortable. It was merely a pit stop for her. Somewhere to send her mail while she was away. It wasn't that she couldn't afford to have a much more upscale apartment with the best of everything. She simply didn't have a need for those things right now. She was used to sleeping on a cot somewhere or on the streets. To her the apartment was already luxurious to what she was used to. Besides she spent so little time here that it seemed unimportant.
She peeled off the clothing she had been living in the past few days and promptly threw it down the garbage chute. From there she headed for the shower. She couldn't wait to feel that warm water soaking away every tension she felt. The shower didn't disappoint and soon she found herself lathering up in the most luxurious soap she owned. The perfumed scent made her forget how grungy she had felt. She had forgotten how good it could feel to be this squeaky clean.
She turned the shower off and toweled herself dry. She pulled on her cozy fleece robe and headed for the living room. She clicked on the news to see what she had been missing in the world. Who knows maybe there would be a piece on her? Feeling bored she headed to the computer and scanned through her email. There was one from her sister so she opened it. Much to her horror it was pictures of her choices in brides maid dresses. One was a bright fuchsia, which she thought was appalling. Another was the frightful teal green she had envisioned with a huge bow on the front. Oh my God she thought it is much worse than I thought. She promptly sent off a response to her sister's email.
Lindsey,
I hope you are joking! I wouldn't be caught dead in a dress like that! I love you, but not enough to subject myself to that.
Samara
She laughed to herself as she hit send. She continued through her email and was surprised to receive a quick reply from her sister. She must have caught her online. She opened the email anxious to see what she would have to say.
Samara,
I knew that would get a rise out of you! No those are not my real dress choices. I already have them picked out though with our without your opinion. I will leave it as a surprise for when you get here! Where are you? Are you back in the States?
Lindsey
Instead of sending off another email Samara grabbed the phone. When her sister answered she felt herself get choked up. The two girls spent the next two hours reminiscing and talking about the upcoming wedding. Samara was amazed by all the things they had to talk about. For the first time in seventeen years she felt homesick. There was a part of her that really missed it.
Still feeling sentimental she decided to search for her old photo albums. She went to her bedroom and uncovered some boxes. She knew the photo albums where in there somewhere. "Found them!" she cried as she dragged the box towards her bed. She flopped down on the bed and began going through the old family photographs. It brought back so many wonderful memories. Then it struck her the wedding was a little over a month away but maybe she would surprise everyone by coming home now. She could use this extra time with her family to help her put her last assignment behind her. Maybe her little sis could use some advice when it comes to her big day. It was settled tomorrow she would call a travel agent and make the arrangements. Settling down for sleep she drifted peacefully off with visions of home swimming in her head.
The plane ride was unremarkable but now she had a two-hour drive to get home. She picked up the keys from the rental agent and headed for the parking lot. With her luggage on board it wasn't long before she was on her way. All along the drive all she could think about was how beautiful the scenery was. She had been all over the world but had forgotten just how beautiful home could be. The rugged mountains kissed the sky and lush green fields seemed to stretch forever. She found her way easily and quickly found herself on the exit to home. Then as if in some dreamscape the ocean came into view. Wow she thought this is amazing. She pulled the car over to the side to have a closer look.
She walked down to the beach and watched the seagulls squeal above her. A cool breeze blew off the water and she was in awe of how wonderful the salt water smelled. She had all but forgotten its beauty. She crouched down and put her hand in the cool water. She saw a small starfish like the ones she and her sister collected as children. She was so close now she thought. She headed back to the car eager to get home and surprise everyone.
Once in town she was surprised to see how little had changed. Everything was so familiar it was so comforting. Finally she arrived at her parent's driveway and pulled in alongside her father's truck. She bolted for the door before her mother could look out to see who was coming. She stepped over the threshold to be met by shock and surprise from her parents. The smell of fresh baked bread wafted through the kitchen making Samara hungry. She embraced her mother and father and it wasn't long before her mother was offering her some of that bread. Samara helped herself to a thick slice smothered with her mother's homemade raspberry preserves. She thought it was better than anything she had ever tasted.
Thinking she needed rest Samara's mom brought her bags to her bedroom and ushered her inside. Samara insisted that she was not tired but her mother would not take no for an answer. She left Samara sitting on the bed in her childhood bedroom. It had been kept as if a shrine to the child she once was. Her trophies and awards still hung on the walls. Her small desk sat in the corner still displaying her favorite photographs of the time on the bulletin board above it. Stuffed toys guarded her bed and posters of her favorite heartthrobs of the time stared at her from the walls.
Sleep was not in her future because her sister soon bolted in through the bedroom door. The two girls embraced and began chatting all at once. Finally Samara interrupted to ask about the wedding plans.
"Will you tell me what the dress will look like?" asked Samara.
"Well...I could but I'm going to keep you sweating a little longer. There will be a fitting a week before the wedding so you can see it then."
"You are going to make me wait that long!"
"Oh Samara! It will be fine."
"And if its not?"
"Don't you trust my judgment?"
"Well I don't know you are marrying Jason. I mean he was the kid who threw rocks at you since you were three."
Lindsey laughed loudly "You are right sis but I promise you he has improved".
"So tell me who is the best man? What geek do you have me standing with?"
"Well I don't know if he is a geek or not, you tell me he was your friend."
"My friend?"
"Yep"
Samara could tell by the smug look on her sister's face that she was dying to tell her who it was. "Okay so who?"
"Travis Robbins."
With the sound of his name Samara felt herself flush. She tried not to draw too much attention to the fact and got up and looked out the window. " I didn't know he was friends with Jason."
"Jason has worked for Travis' construction company for many years."
"Oh".
"Didn't you and Travis have some sort of romance way back when?"
"Samara you feeling alright?"
"Yes why?"
"Well you look a little flustered." With that Lindsey burst out laughing. Samara tried to hide her feelings and lobbed one of the stuffed toys at her sister hitting her in the head. "Yeah some things never change. You will get to see him soon enough."
"Why is that?"
"Patsy is throwing a barbecue on the weekend and now that you are home the entire bridal party will be there."
"Great I can't wait."
"You always were a terrible liar sis. Maybe you and Travis can start a little fireworks display for us."
"That's it, get out!" Samara crossed the room and held the door open.
"Oh come on sis I know you want him."
"Leave!"
"Okay okay." Lindsey got up and moved to the door. She stopped and gave her sister a quick kiss. "I love you anyway, and I'm really glad you are here."
"I thought I was too." Samara couldn't help but to laugh.
They hugged briefly. "I really should go and let you get some rest. You are not getting any younger."
"You are really cruising for a bruising. You are not too big for me yet little sis, I can still take ya." With that she shoved Lindsey out the door.
"I can take a hint! I'll drop by tomorrow."
"Okay I'll see you then. Goodnight."
"Sweet dreams...of Travis!"
"Go home already!" Samara closed the door this time leaving her sister and her laugher behind it. It wasn't that she never thought of Travis over the years; it's just that she never imagined he would still be around here and that she would be seeing him. She felt uneasy and a little like an awkward teenager. She went to her closet and moved some boxes from the corner. She pulled at the floorboards and discovered it was still loose. She reached inside and pulled out her old diary. She flipped through the pages until she reached pictures of her and Travis. She walked over to the bed and to her bag that sat next to it. She reached in the bag and pulled out the little teddy bear. She looked at the bear in her hand and the one in the photo. It seemed like a lifetime ago that Travis won it for her. He spent the whole day at the fair trying to win her something. He was so proud of it. Feelings stirred inside of her but she wasn't sure of what it meant. She pretended she didn't know the significance of the bear but she knew it had meant something to her at one time just like Travis had meant something to her.
Samara got herself ready for bed and slipped beneath the covers. She placed the little bear on the night table and stared at it. Travis had been her first lover and her first love. She stared at the photographs in her hand. Restless she began to think back on that summer seventeen years ago...
Samara had been working hard at college. She had made the deans list and had taken extra courses. She continued her studies through her summers but her parents were worried that she was working too hard. They wanted her to enjoy herself a little more and take a little break before she finished college and her life became more serious. With a lot of convincing she came home to spend a summer off. They didn't even want her to have a summer job they wanted her to get out as much as possible and have a good time. Samara had always been a serious student and never had much of a social life. She hadn't dated in high school. She was such a tomboy that none of the boys even considered her dating material. While her peers wearing make-up and high heels Samara was still interested in beating the boys at arm wrestling. She always felt she had something to prove.
That summer she looked more of a woman than she ever had. In college she had developed a sense of her feminine self and she enjoyed expressing it. Not used to having so much free time on her hands Samara had become bored. Then her cousin Cathy and her family came and things changed quickly. Cathy and Samara had always been good friends but this summer they were inseparable. They spent all of their free time together but Cathy's time was divided between Samara and her boyfriend. Samara often felt like the third wheel so Cathy made it her mission to find a man for her. When she learned Samara was still a virgin she was even more determined to find her a man. More importantly she wanted Samara to lose her virginity.
It wasn't that Samara was in a hurry to lose her virginity but her lack of experience bothered her a great deal. At college when the other girls spoke of their lovers it made her feel like she was really missing out on something. She had always been so devoted to athletics and academics that she had little time to focus on finding a boyfriend. That side of her had woken up quickly and she found herself more and more interested in sex. She read absolutely everything she possibly could on the subject hoping to gain some insight but she knew that experiencing it first hand was the only way to really learn of sex. She longed to know what it was like and hoped that Cathy would have some luck finding her the right man for the job.
Cathy introduced Samara to many boys that summer but none of them caught her attention. Then one day it came to Cathy... Travis. Travis Robbins was few years older than the girls and was known to be a little rough around the edges. His parents had been killed when he was younger and now he lived with his uncle. His uncle tried his best to keep Travis on the right path but Travis was the sort of man who had to learn everything the hard way. He was really good looking and had a reputation with the ladies and that is what Samara needed. She needed a man with experience a man who would know what buttons to push. Samara agreed and so they made it their mission to track him down. He was from a neighboring town but to Samara's surprise she had no idea who he was. He was a few years older so maybe that is why they had never met. Or at least that is what she thought at the time.
Together Cathy and Samara hit every hang out for miles around always enquiring about Travis. They always seemed to arrive just after he had left. When people found out that Samara was interested in him they all but laughed at her. They told her straight out that Travis wouldn't be interested in a girl like her. Feeling a little put down but not willing to give up she continued her search until she found him.
It was late and She and Cathy had been leaning up against a bike rack outside one of the local hangouts. An older model blue Firebird pulled into the parking lot. Cathy nudged Samara and said, "That's him! That's Travis!" Unimpressed with the car Samara looked his way. When their eyes met he smiled and her heart melted. He was just as handsome as Cathy had said. Cathy went to him immediately and struck up a conversation. She pretended they were stranded there and needed a ride home. Travis was happy to oblige and so the girls got in the car.
Cathy did all the talking on the way home while Samara sat shyly in the back seat. Travis pulled into an empty parking lot close to where she lived and everyone got out of the car. Suddenly Cathy blurted out that Samara was interested in going on a date. At first Travis didn't say anything he just looked towards Samara. Feeling embarrassed she hung her head. "Sure." He said. "Why don't I pick you up here tomorrow night? Around eight?"
"She will be here, right Samara?"
"Yes I'll be here, eight. I'll see you then."
Travis stepped towards the car and got in. He looked back at the girls and started the car. "I'll see you then Samara, goodnight."
Samara's heart was pounding. "Goodnight". Oh my God she thought. What will I do tomorrow? How can I go on a date with that man?
She and Cathy made their way home all the way chatting about their big night. Samara was in disbelief of how well things went. That night in bed she tossed and turned all she could think about was Travis's smile and how it made her feel. Strange feelings were brewing in her and she knew right away that if he were willing she would make love to him. She just wasn't sure of his feelings for her. In her head she rehearsed their date a million times. Trying out different scenarios in her head. As the sun was pushing its way into the sky she fell off to sleep.
The night of their first date was here and Samara waited anxiously in the parking lot. Worried that she might get stood up she acted aloof. She saw Travis's car off in the distance and her heart began to race. That night they spent a lot of time driving around and talking. They talked about themselves, their dreams and hopes for the future. Samara was surprised to discover they had a lot in common. They went to a local diner and had pie and coffee. It was there that Samara thought she was falling in love. She could remember sitting there watching him talk and being in awe. He wasn't like anyone she had met before. He was so together and so sure of his future. He had a confidence about him but he wasn't arrogant. He worked hard and believed it would take him where he wanted to go. That night when he brought her home they shared their first kiss. Cathy was right about Travis having experience because Samara had never been kissed like that. When he kissed her she felt it all over her body. It was as if ever nerve and fiber within her was awakened and she was feeling life for the first time. His warm soft lips engulfed hers passionately and she felt swept away by his intensity.
For the rest of the summer Travis and Samara spent every night together. Sometimes they just hung out other nights they spent their time making out. Thinking back on it Samara was so naïve and innocent. She never had anyone touch her let alone touch her in the places she let Travis touch her. She could remember the first night they started making out heavily. He began kissing her neck and it was as if her neither region had awakened from a long slumber. These feelings were so foreign to her but it felt so good. It made her want to go so much further and experience everything. In his experienced hands she was his slave. She just waited breathlessly for the next kiss and the next touch.
Then came the night they went all the way. She remembered everything with fine detail. They had spent the evening driving and talking as usual. Eventually they went parking on a secluded gravel road. They were out of the car and he was sitting on the hood with her between his legs his arms holding her tightly. They were just talking and he was kissing the back of her neck. Then he said something that surprised her. He said that he had had a crush on her for sometime. She was stunned because she didn't remember ever meeting him before. She prided herself on remembering names and faces with ease. He explained how they had met when she was home on Christmas vacation a couple of years ago. She was visiting relatives and he stopped in because he was friends with their eldest son. He recalled to her tiny details about the evening; things she barely remembered. For the first time she thought that maybe Travis had feelings for her like she had for him. In that moment she knew tonight was the night. She knew in her heart that tonight she wouldn't stop him. Tonight would end this teasing torture for the both of them.
She turned to face him and they began to kiss. When he began to touch her she made no move to stop. She could remember him pulling her shirt from her jeans and slipping his hand inside. He stroked her breast through the silky fabric of her bra while she panted in his ear. She felt too weak to touch him back. She could only accept what he was doing to her and wait with great anticipation for his next caress. He pulled his hand away from her breast and moved to her pants, at first he just rubbed her on the outside of her jeans but it was not enough for her. She moaned in disapproval hoping he would touch her throbbing sex. Finally he moved to her button and undid the zipper. When he slipped his hand inside she thought she would burst. She didn't think anything could feel this good or that she could want it so badly. She clumsily tried to get a foot onto the bummer so he would be touching more of her. She wanted his hands to engulf her whole sex and continue this quest for pleasure she was on.
Suddenly Travis pulled away and sighed. "Okay. That is about as much as I can handle here." He said. Shocked and puzzled Samara just stood there horrified that it was going to stop. She pulled him close and began kissing him. "Cut it out Samara, you have no idea what you are doing to me."
"Travis I don't want to stop." She said with a desperate pleading in her voice.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes I really want this." Travis had no idea Samara was a virgin and she figured this was definitely not the time to tell him. She just wanted to go with it. She knew so little about it really only a few things she had read and overheard at college. She had no real expectations. From her friends she had heard it was usually a bad experience. She just couldn't believe that given how Travis made her feel.
"Okay, but not here. Lets go."
They were off in the car and were soon heading down another gravel road she was unfamiliar with. They pulled over on the shoulder and then he took her hand and they began walking through the woods. The path was well worn and easy to follow in the moonlight. Soon they were at a tiny cabin. It was nothing spectacular but it was perched on a beautiful lake. The inside left a lot to be desired. A small woodstove sat in one corner. Along the walls were a couple of benches that doubled as beds with twin mattresses for seats. A small wooden table sat next to one of the bunks and Travis pulled a candle out of the drawer. The tiny light cast shadows on the dingy walls. An old quilt lay on one of the beds. It was not exactly how she imagined her first time but she didn't care. She wanted Travis and that was all that mattered.
He led her to the bunk and they lay together side by side. He stroked her hair carefully and for a long while they just lay there looking into each other's eyes. Having waited long enough Samara made the first move and moved to kiss him. It wasn't long before things heated up and Travis pulled himself on top of her. Still in their clothing she could feel his hard sex pushing against her jeans. Just take it out she thought, just let me have it! She made a move for the button of his jeans but he stopped her. Sensing her impatience he pulled himself up and pulled his shirt off over his head. His hard body looked so impressive by the candlelight; never had she seen such a beautiful man she thought. In her eyes he was perfect.
He helped Samara sit up and he pulled her shirt over her head. Not done yet he reached around her back and undid her bra. He pulled her bra off exposing her young soft skin. Her excitement was mounting; she had never exposed herself to anyone before. This time when their bodies collided she was met with the sensation of skin on skin. It was such an incredible moment she wished she could feel this way forever. Travis began kissing her breasts and nipples yet another new experience for Samara. Her anticipation was growing with each kiss. Her nipples were so sensitive and she moaned with his slightest touch. He continued to touch her and kiss her as he carefully undid her jeans. Feeling a little modest she leaned over and blew out the candle. He stood up and pulled her jeans along with her panties down her legs. There she lay in front of him naked but not feeling vulnerable. She wanted this just as badly or even more than he did. She loved him and she wanted to consummate those feelings by giving him the ultimate gift, the gift of her physical body and her virginity.
Still standing Travis made the move to remove his own pants. When she heard his pants hit the floor she let out a long sigh. This is it she thought. There is no going back. He moved on top of her and she opened her legs to accommodate his body. His hard sex brushed her thigh and she felt her excitement growing all the more. In that moment she wanted him inside of her more than she had ever wanted anything. He maneuvered his body a little higher and she could feel him pressing at her sex. As he glided inside of her he hung up slightly on her maidenhead. Not knowing she was a virgin he pushed hard and found his way inside of her. She cried out but the pain was miniscule compared to the pleasure she was feeling. Lacking experience her instincts took over and soon she found herself moving in rhythm with his body. It was so much better than she expected and she wondered why she had waited so long to experience this. She felt that if she died in that moment it wouldn't matter. Everything in her only felt and focused on the pleasure.
After that night the summer sped by far too quickly. Travis and Samara spent their days playing and their nights making love. Soon the time came for Samara to return to college. They both cried and held each. Each vowed to stay in touch, letters were sent but no replies came. She never saw him again.
Samara looked at the handful of photographs in her hand. Seventeen years was a long time and so much had happened. In a week she would be seeing him again. How would she feel? How would he feel? Will they act as strangers or long time friends? She didn't know. She put the pictures back in the journal and returned them to their hiding place in the closet. She hopped back in bed and turned off the light. She passed into sleep quickly dreaming of the past.
******************************************************************
The week passed quickly with Samara helping Lindsey with her wedding preparations. Now she knew why she didn't get married she thought. There were countless trips into town and so many questions to answer. Who the hell cares what color the napkins are she thought, or if the flowers on the cake are an exact match to the bridal party dresses. A big wedding like this was definitely not her scene. She always imagined being barefoot on some exotic beach. Now more than ever it seemed like the perfect idea. In a way the week passed by too quickly because she was facing down the Barbecue in a couple of hours. It was no longer something in the distant future it was tonight and she felt more than one knot in her stomach.
Samara had showered and gotten ready and had been that way for a while. The only problem was finding something to wear. Her clothes were practical; she didn't think to bring something fun and flirty. She waited patiently in her bathrobe for Lindsey to arrive with some things from her closet that would be more appropriate. After trying on everything Lindsey had brought she settled on a red skirt that had a little flair at the bottom. It clung nicely to her curves and showed off her toned legs. She chose a black halter-top to wear with it. It wasn't flashy or anything but she thought it showed enough skin to be sexy but not enough to look trashy. Once she was dressed she began to feel a little more confident. Lindsey and Samara left together and Lindsey drove them to her Patsy's house. From the outside they could see the party had already begun. There were cars everywhere and they could hear the din of people talking and laughing.
The girls hopped out of the car and headed for the door. Before Lindsey could open the door Samara was taking one last long deep breath to calm herself. Once inside they followed the sound of the crowd out towards the patio. The living room was filled with guests along with several more who had wandered out onto the patio. People moved in and out and she anxiously scoured the room hoping to catch a glimpse of Travis. How silly she thought maybe she wouldn't even recognize him. After all seventeen years is a long time he could have changed a lot.
With a drink in hand Samara began to move about the group. She was surprised by how many people she recognized. Most were friends who grew up with her little sister but it was fun playing catch up. A lot of people were interested in her and her career. She held her audience captive while she recanted some of her most memorable stories from over the years. All of a sudden she was aware that someone was looking at her. She only glanced at first and continued to tell her story. Then it struck her that it was Travis. She looked again quickly to see him looking at her. If she had forgotten the chemistry they once shared then her body certainly hadn't. Her body shook from head to toe but not out of fear. It was as if it felt some incredible draw. Other people must have felt it too because they quickly left as Travis made his way to her. He was standing only a few feet from her and she could feel the tension. She swallowed hard trying to regain her composure.
"Hello Samara, it's been a while." He quickly grabbed her arm and pulled her into the empty hallway.
"Travis, I'm surprised to see you here tonight." God she thought I'm a terrible liar. I'm sure he could see right through that. Time had been good to him she thought. You could tell he was older but aging had given his features a more rugged masculine look. He had maintained his hard body nicely she was impressed.
"Why would it be a surprise?" He asked with mischief in his eyes.
Oh yeah he can see right through me she thought. "I don't know I figured the wife and kids might have kept you home tonight."
"Well there is no ring on my finger and I've noticed there isn't one on yours either."
Feeling silly Samara glanced down at her hand. "Well I'm still waiting for Mr. Right to come along."
"You already found him seventeen years ago."
Feeling sheepish Samara looked down at the ground. "I sense sarcasm and anger in your tone. I don't understand why you would be angry with me."
" You don't? After how much your hurt me."
"I hurt you? I didn't do anything you were the one who left."
"Samara I wrote to you for months but it was as if you vanished off the face of the earth. Was it too much to expect one little letter? If you wanted to end things it was all it would have taken. One little letter but apparently my feelings were not important enough for you to make the time to write."
Samara was stunned by what she was hearing she wanted to say something back but she was so caught off guard that she really had no answer. She moved her lips as if to speak but nothing came out. She simply shrugged.
"For seventeen years I've waited for this moment to ask you why. I mean we talked about the future. We talked about being a part of each other's future. To this day no one has hurt me like that. What was that summer to you? What was I to you? I poured my heart and soul into every letter hoping that one would spur you into having a conscious. Into telling me what I did wrong or why your feelings changed."
"I don't know what to say." That wasn't a lie she really didn't know how to answer his question. The things he was saying to her didn't make any sense. She had written him faithfully for months with no reply. How can he be saying he never received any of them? Yes eventually the letters stopped coming but only after months of trying to reach him. She had even called several times but by then he had moved up north for work.
"Jesus Samara say something. Maybe you have gotten too big for us small town folk and you don't feel like I deserve an explanation."
"It isn't like that." She pleaded. Still trying to figure out what could have happened. "Travis I'm not sure what happen, but it wasn't like that."
He grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her towards him. "You are just as selfish today as you were back then. You know exactly why you did the things you did." His voice became louder and angrier now. "I fucking hate you Samara for everything you did and for everything you stand for!" With a disgusted look on his face he turned and left her but she was frozen to the spot. She couldn't even look at him. She just felt sick inside. She wanted so badly to tell him the things he wanted to hear but she really didn't know all the reasons herself. She tried to give chase but he left too quickly slamming the door as he went.
Samara felt embarrassed she just stood there while everyone stared at her in disbelief. Lindsey came to her rescue. "Come on Samara lets get out of here". Lindsey ushered her sister though the room and toward the door. Once safely outside in the car Samara broke down and began to sob. Lindsey didn't stop instead she drove them to the beach. The girls got out of the car and sat together on top of an old well-worn picnic table. They had come here often as children. Here they shared their dreams, hopes, and they played in the water like the careless children they were. Samara wished more than ever that she could be that carefree child again.
With a soft caress Lindsey hugged her sister lending comfort. "What was going on in there?"
Samara sat quietly for a few minutes and then she began telling her story. For the first time in her life she shared the story of her and Travis with someone. Her sister listened intently to every word never interrupting just taking it all in. Samara told her of how much she loved Travis and how the end of the summer came and she went back to college.
"So if the two of you had this whirlwind romance why didn't you stay together? I heard him say that he wrote to you but you didn't answer his letters. Why?"
" I don't know why he said that; I never received any letters from him at all."
"Come on Samara he sounded sincere about it and you could tell he was really hurt."
"I know but I wrote to him for months! I'm telling you I never received one reply. I called several times and he was always out, then eventually I was told he moved up north for work."
"So what the hell happened? I mean if both of you wrote where did the letters go?"
Samara was sobbing now. "I honestly don't know. Jesus Lindsey this hurt me just as badly as it hurt him. I thought he didn't love me; that he moved on. I felt that the summer was just a lie."
Lindsey patted her sister's hand. " I think you should talk to him and tell him that you did write. You know he has never married or anything. Maybe somehow the things that happened have prevented him from going on with his life. That isn't fair and you need to let him know it wasn't him, that is was something out of your control."
Samara nodded her head. She wiped her eyes and said. "You're right I don't know how but I'm going to tell him that I did write. If some misunderstanding has caused him pain then I have to try and make it right, he deserves that." For a long while the girls just sat there staring off onto the dark water. A cold breeze came up making them shiver and they headed for the car.
"Well sis you have a couple of weeks to think about what you want to tell him."
"Yeah I know. I guess we will see each other at the wedding. Oh and I'll try and behave myself after all I don't want to ruin your big day."
"Sis you are here and that already makes my big day the best ever." They didn't speak as they pulled into the driveway. Samara sent her sister a little glance and a small smile. She walked from the car thinking of everything that happened. Mentally exhausted she got ready for bed and crawled beneath the sheets. She tried to think about what could have happened. How Travis never received her letters. Could it be true that he wrote her too? She could remember how devastated she felt when she didn't get a reply from her first letter. How others that followed pleaded with him to write. Any answer would have been easier to bear than his silence.
The wedding day arrived so quickly Samara couldn't believe a month had passed. The past weeks were filled with a whirlwind of activities. She watched her sister become a Bridezilla as the constant stress of being asked her opinion on so many miniscule details got the better of her. The rehearsal was last night but it was uneventful. Travis was there but they never spoke. She never had the opportunity to get him to herself. Instead they went trough the motions and played nice. She was relieved of that because she feared something would happen to ruin the wedding. At least he had called a truce and saw the importance of remaining cool and calm for the big day. She wanted to talk to him but how could she convince him that she really wrote to him. First she had to find out where the letters really went.
Samara pulled the lavender colored dress over her slim frame. It was not a color she would have chosen for herself but thought it looked good. It had spaghetti straps, a deep v in the front, and her tiny waist was accentuated with a slight twist in the fabric that pulled to the left. It was a beautiful detail that really added that special touch to the dress. Her hair had been pulled up into an updo secured with pins filled with rhinestones. She felt like a princess, almost as if it could be her own wedding. She looked at herself in the mirror a little taken aback by how she looked. She was used to wearing rough protective clothing covered in dust and dirt. Even in her home wardrobe her clothing tended to be more practical for work. Today in this dress she felt so feminine and beautiful. There was little left of the tomboy. She sat on the bed and put on the matching strap sandals. She practiced walking around a bit because she desperately needed it.
Finally ready she emerged from the bedroom. Her sister arrived in a panic. Her dress was spread out on their parent's bed and Samara ushered her into the room and helped her into the dress. Samara felt a little choked up looking at her sister. There was a twinge of envy there too because she always thought she would marry first. The photographer arrived and everyone gathered in the living room for the pictures. Samara tried to direct the photographer but Lindsey soon let her know that she was not in charge of the photography today.
Once the pictures of the bride were taken care of everyone gathered in their cars and headed to the church. The men had arrived earlier and were waiting for the women to arrive. The girls gathered in the back of the church with butterflies in their stomachs. When the music began Samara jumped she saw Travis and her heart sank. The other bridesmaids went ahead and then it was Samaras turn. She took Travis' arm and walked slowly through the church smiling and greeting people as she went. She had never seen him in a tuxedo or even a suit for that matter. He looked amazing she thought; she couldn't take her eyes off of him. She took her place opposite of him and for the rest of the ceremony she was enthralled with him. She kept looking over at him and daydreaming. She wondered what it would have been like had she stayed and married him all those years ago. She wondered if he had any spark left for her like the one she was feeling for him. Travis appeared oblivious to her admiration, which was a relief. She didn't want him to notice she was practically drooling over him.
The reception and the food were amazing. Everyone was having a wonderful time. Finally the first dance came around and Samara felt tears stinging her eyes as she watched her sister take her first dance with her new husband. She could see the love in their eyes and she wondered if she would ever find that kind of love. The song changed and it was time for the bridal party to dance. She and Travis took to the floor together and she was surprised by how easy it was to fall into his arms. It felt as if no time had passed. She thought back to the first time they danced. It was at a local club and they held each other so closely. Their bodies were so tight together that the smallest breath couldn't pass between them he sang softly in her ear and whispered such sweet things. Tonight Travis held her off at a respectable distance. She tried to make eye contact with him but he always looked over her. She knew he was still angry with her and that also meant that somewhere buried in there were other feelings for her.
The song ended and Travis immediately moved to get away. Samara held onto him just a little longer than necessary. Finally he looked at her but he never spoke a word. He excused himself saying they needed to clear the floor for the parents to dance. Feeling embarrassed Samara let him go. She watched as he headed for the bar and ordered something to drink. She spotted someone she knew close to him and decided to start up a conversation. Lucky for her Chris one of the other groomsmen stopped to chat with Travis. Suddenly Travis appeared angry. She overheard the conversation and he apparently left the gift he had for the newlyweds at home. He really wanted to go get it but Chris stopped him. "You have had a few drinks Travis so you should stay here; you can't take the chance and drive."
Samara listened intently to their conversation, hanging on their every word. Travis became more agitated as he tried to explain. " I have a gift that is meant for them tonight. I had a basket made up for their big night at the hotel. It would be senseless for them to get it at the gift opening tomorrow. I wanted to plant it in their car as a surprise for later."
"I hope it isn't some sort of gag gift." Said Chris raising an eyebrow.
"No of course not! It has champagne, crystal glasses, truffles, a CD of romantic crap, and a bunch of other stuff."
"Romantic crap? Chris laughed hard. "Well okay bud we will have to find you a ride." Chris shouted out to the crowd. "Anyone able to give Travis here a quick ride home?"
Seeing her chance Samara volunteered. "Sure I can do it, I've not had anything to drink".
Travis rolled his eyes and shook his head. "That's quite alright, you are the sister of the bride I'm sure you have other responsibilities to attend to."
Chris pushed his friend roughly and said "Go on! I mean the girl is nice enough to offer now go!"
Fuming Travis knew he was beat and agreed to go. Once in the car Samara saw it as an opportunity to really talk with Travis. I mean in the car how could he get away from her? He certainly wasn't going to jump out of a moving vehicle. Finally he spoke. "You know Samara this really isn't necessary I could drive myself. I'm far from drunk I've had two drinks."
"Well you just never know. I mean police seeing you leave a wedding party makes you an easier target. It's better to be safe don't you think?"
"Yeah you are always right." He mumbled.
"Why would you say that?"
"It was nothing, just ignore me."
She could see that talking to Travis was going to be far more difficult than she thought. "You know Travis I'm really glad I have this chance to talk to you alone."
"Why is that?"
"I just felt awkward after that whole barbecue thing. I was excited to see you but I wasn't prepared for you to be so angry with me."
"What the hell did you expect? You have been gone for seventeen years with nothing. You didn't write or try to contact me at all. After everything I thought we meant to each other? I just couldn't believe you were so cold. So yeah maybe I did harbor a few bad feelings towards you, but I'm over it."
"Just like that, you are over it?"
"Well yeah I knew I was being an ass the other night. It was seventeen years ago so what does that mean today. So much has happened in both our lives I'm sure. It's water under the bridge."
Samara could sense in his tone that he was holding back. She knew he had more to say but he was being diplomatic to keep the peace. "Well Travis I have a few things I'd like to say to you."
Travis didn't reply at first he simply motioned with his arm as to which direction they should go. "Look Samara you don't owe me anything. There is nothing you can say or do to repair the bad blood between us. Too much happened back then and I'm not interested in digging up the past."
"Bad blood? Look Travis I'm not here to try and convince you to forgive me for the past; I was young, we were both young for that matter. I made a lot of mistakes and I'm not proud of that. I'd just like to give my side of the story."
"Pull off here." He said pointing to a familiar gravel road.
Samara jumped to attention as she turned carefully onto the gravel road. She instantly recognized it as the road to the old cabin. God she thought maybe he is more sentimental than he is letting on. I mean why take me back here?
"Okay first driveway on your right." Said Travis his voice stern. When Samara made the turn she was surprised to see a long driveway leading to a house sitting on the spot the cabin once stood on. It was beautiful with a wrap around porch that hung over the water. Floodlights bathed the porch in soft light making it look so cozy and inviting.
"You live here?" She asked.
"Yes I built it years ago. I always loved this spot and imagined owning a home here someday and now I do."
"Wow it is beautiful. I actually thought you were being sentimental."
"Jesus Samara get over yourself."
His words stung but she tried her best to hide it. They got out of the car and made their way to the door. Once inside Travis went upstairs to retrieve the gift basket. "I'm going to change out of this monkey suit seeing I'm here." He called.
Samara looked around the room and was impressed by his attention to detail. His place looked like a real home and not some squatter like her place. She spotted an intricately carved box laying on a bookshelf and decided to take a closer look. The wood was beautiful and she ran her hand along the lid. When she did she noticed a small piece of paper sticking out from it. She opened the lid to tuck it back inside and noticed that it was a newspaper clipping. It was a picture she had taken several years ago. Her curiosity got the better of her and she opened the box all the way and looked through the papers. It was a collection of every published article that involved her. She was shocked that he had kept them. In the bottom of the box were photographs of them at the cabin from that long ago summer. She was so engrossed with the articles that she didn't hear Travis come down the stairs. He laid the basket down on the floor next to him and the sound of it startled her. She placed everything back in the box and offered up an explanation.
"I found it by accident. I mean I wasn't looking for anything. Just a little piece of paper was sticking out and I thought I'd..."
"You thought you would snoop."
"No it wasn't like that."
"Well you are a reporter, I guess I should have expected it. Maybe that is why you wanted to come here so you could snoop around into my life."
"Okay Travis enough is enough. I'm shocked by your bitterness and I really don't appreciate it."
"I don't really care what you appreciate."
"Listen Travis I really wanted to give you an explanation as to what may have happened but you know what you don't deserve it."
Travis moved towards her quickly and grabbed her arms. "You don't deserve this either." He said as he bent down and kissed her passionately. Her arms rose to embrace his shoulders. Her mouth met his with a hunger that matched his own. Her body responded immediately with a feeling of want she had not felt in what seemed like forever. He ran his hands through her hair pulling her hair loose and spilling the jeweled clips to the floor He pushed her back towards the buffet, she heard things fall but she never stopped to see what it was. She was focused on nothing but the moment. He tugged at her dress trying to pull it down her body. With a sharp tug he broke one of the straps but managed to free her breasts. He handled them roughly, which only fueled her fire. She pulled her hands over his back and buttocks as if trying to explore every inch of him at once.
Samara couldn't believe what was happening but she had no desire to stop it. She swooned in Travis's able hands and she longed to feel him inside of her. She could feel his hand moving slowly up her thigh. The silky fabric of the dress slid up her leg with ease. She moaned when his hand found her panties and he gave them a sharp tug. Her flimsy panties offered little in the way of resistance and they eagerly followed his hand. He spun her around and pushed her into the buffet. Her hands found a spot and she braced herself for what she knew was coming. Travis quickly undid his pants and pulled his hard manhood from its resting place. He didn't wait for Samara to lean into him or open her legs; he simply pushed himself toward her until he found her wetness welcoming him inside. With one great thrust her body yielded to him and he was inside of her the both of them moaning with satisfaction to finally feel relief from the lust they were feeling.
Travis couldn't hold back on his excitement and he moved in and out of her at a fevered pace. Samara felt her panties tangled around her knees making it difficult to open her legs. She desperately wanted to open them so he could thrust more deeply. She cried out both in frustration and in pleasure. She had imagined making love to Travis again but this is not how she envisioned it. He was her first lover and she wanted to show him that she was no longer that inexperienced child he knew back then. She wanted him to see her as the experienced woman she had become; she wanted him to know that she could give him as much pleasure as he gave her. Travis' pace changed to slower but deeper thrusts and Samara could feel his sex thicken inside of her, she knew he was seconds away from coming. The thought sent a wave of pleasure through her causing her to come. When her body contracted around his sex it was more than Travis could take with a long loud moan he spilled his seed inside of her.
Travis wasted no time he pulled his pants back up and redid the button and zipper in seconds. He stepped away from Samara and said get yourself together we have to get back. Samara was shocked by his behavior. Didn't they just make love? What was his hurry? Why was he acting so cold about it? She pulled up her panties and fixed her dress the best she could. "Do you have a safety pin for the strap?" She asked.
"Sure." With that he went to the kitchen and rummaged through a drawer. He handed her the pin but offered no assistance.
"Well could you help? I mean the break is from the back and I can't reach it."
Seeming frustrated Travis moved towards her and helped fix the broken strap. She picked up the bobby pins and headed for a mirror in the living room. She was trying to fix her hair when Travis picked up the basket and headed out the door. Samara did the best she could with her hair but was feeling puzzled. What just happened here she thought. What was with the silent treatment?
Travis was already in the car staring ahead. At first Samara never spoke and they were almost back to the reception when she finally spoke. "So what was that back there?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?" asked Samara as she pulled into a parking space.
Travis jumped out of the car. "Yeah it meant nothing just like seventeen years ago." He slammed the car door and Samara felt as if he had slammed it on her heart.
Feeling heartsick Samara made her way inside. Seeing the happy party- goers just made her pain feel all the worse. She quickly found Lindsey and gave her a kiss." I'm sorry little sis but I'm going to head home"
"What? Already?"
"Yeah I'm not feeling very well. I'm feeling a bit stomach sick. I'm going to lie down at home for a while and if I feel up to it I'll be back later." It was a lie she knew she wouldn't be back. She just had to find some way to excuse herself from this place and distance herself from Travis and what just happened.
"Okay but I hope you are not gone too long." Lindsey gave Samara a huge hug then watched as she walked away. She saw Travis across the room taking in the scene and she wondered if he had something to do with Samaras mysterious illness. She made her way over to him and asked "How about the best man takes the bride out for a spin on the dance floor."
"I thought you would never ask." They took to the floor but Lindsey wasted no time in getting to the point.
"So what happen with Samara?"
"I don't know why do you ask?"
"Well she left right after she got back with you. She says she is sick."
"Too bad."
"Did something happen between the two of you?"
"Like what?"
"What is with the short answers? Are you trying to avoid my questions?"
"Look Lindsey what happens between Samara and I is between us."
"Well she is my sister and I care about her and what happens to her. She wanted to explain things to you."
"I didn't need any explanations."
"Well you sure wanted one the other night at the barbecue."
"Lets just say Samara has a better understanding of what she did to me."
"Why? What did you say?"
"I didn't say anything."
"Then what the hell happen to upset her enough to leave the wedding?"
"Lets say I had an itch and I scratched it."
"Travis you know I thought you were better than that. No wonder you ended up alone, you have let bitterness destroy anything good left in you. Samara deserves someone so much better than that. Samara did write to you and even called but you were never around and didn't bother to answer her letters. Now you want to punish her? For what?" With that Lindsey pushed Travis away and left the dance floor.
She was right and Travis knew it. He felt ashamed of himself for what he did. The truth was he was still hurt over what Samara did. Taking her as he did today was meant to be revenge. So why didn't it feel good? Who ever said revenge was sweet couldn't have been more wrong because tonight it was a bitter pill to swallow. He didn't know what to think of Lindsey saying Samara had written and even called. He had to get to the bottom of this.
Travis went to his truck and drove to Samara's parents house. Samaras rental was in the driveway so he knew she would be there. He didn't bother to knock on the door instead he quietly let himself in. He walked down the hall and called her name. "Samara? Are you in here?" He didn't get a reply but saw a light from under her bedroom door. He opened it to find Samara lying on the bed in a bathrobe with a book in her hand. "What are you reading?"
"Nothing." She said as she tucked the little journal under the pillow. "What are you doing here?"
"Please don't make this any more difficult than it already is. I've come to say I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. I thought I was getting you out of my system but it didn't work that way. I just really need to know what happen. Why did you stop loving me? Why wasn't I good enough?"
"My God Travis is that what you think? That you weren't good enough or that I simply stopped loving you?"
"Well why else would you just drop me cold like that?"
"Travis there is so much I've wanted to say to you to explain to you."
"Well I'm here so lets hear it."
Instead she pulled the journal from beneath the pillow and handed it to him. "Start reading from the night of our first date." She opened the journal to the right page and handed it him. Travis took a seat on the edge of the bed and he began to read. He laughed as the words brought back such warm memories. So many little things he had completely forgotten about were now remembered with fine clarity. Finally he reached the part of when she went back to college.
August 23
Tonight Travis and I said goodbye. We spent the day at the little cabin and it was wonderful. It was a hot day and we took a long swim in the lake. It was perfect and I didn't want to leave. We spent the evening making love; I know I'll never love like that again. Even though I was a virgin I know he'll always be the best lover I ever had. There was just something magical about the way we touched. I don't know how I'm going to go on without him. I want to stay but I've already put so much time into school and my career
"You were a virgin?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
" I didn't want it to be a big deal. I wanted you to make love to me because you wanted to and not because it was a personal challenge."
"You must have thought I was a huge asshole."
"No it wasn't that. I didn't tell you at first because I didn't know you well enough. Then later I was afraid it would stop you from making love to me."
"Believe me, nothing would have stopped me."
They both laughed and he continued reading. He read on focusing on the entries that caught his attention.
September 2nd
Today I sent a letter to Travis. I've written to him everyday this week but I've not gotten anything back yet. I guess he is a little slower at getting his letters out there. I can't wait for thanksgiving so we can be together again.
September 20th,
Still no word from Travis. I called again last night but his uncle said he was out. I thought that the things we felt for each other were real. I don't understand how he could do this to me. I'm so tired of checking the mail everyday only to be defeated.
September 30th
I don't know what to say. My heart feels like it has had every ounce of emotion squeezed out of it. Like a fool I keep writing hoping to stir something inside of him. Hoping that somehow I can dig deep and find that man I met at the beginning of the summer.
November 3rd,
I love Travis so much that it hurts. I've stopped writing him letters because it is too painful. I called again but his uncle said he moved up north. I asked for his number there but his uncle told me that Travis didn't want it given out. It was like a knife in my heart. How could he be so cruel? What did I do to deserve this?
November 22nd
I'm home now for the Thanksgiving holidays. Maybe Travis not writing me back was a good thing. Had we stayed in touch we simply would have dragged out the inevitable. We were too young. I wasn't experienced enough to keep him satisfied. I was naïve all the way around and I know in time he would have been bored with my childish ways. This way he is free to go on with his life, to marry, have children, and be happy. That is all I want for him. Being home is so hard. I think I will see him everywhere I go. I don't think I could stand to see him with someone else. My internship starts up after the semester. I'm looking forward to it and I'm looking forward to leaving this place and the sad memories behind.
Travis read on in disbelief here in her words were the pain and rejection he had felt. Finally he was seeing a clear picture that Samara didn't abandon him like he thought. Reading all of her memories brought back so many of his own. "Samara if we were both writing letters where did they go?"
"I don't know? I wish I did. I mean it is so odd that both of our letters were lost. That not one letter got through."
"Someone had to do it. Someone who wanted to stop us, but who and why?"
"I don't know, but for what it is worth I'm sorry."
"You were right though. We were both young and running in opposite directions. I'd dreamed of spending my life here and you dreamed of jet setting around the world. I was the one being foolish. I had this grand idea that love would conquer all."
"That isn't so foolish."
"Maybe not but letting my anger and bitterness ruin every other relationship I'd been in was."
"God Travis I'm so sorry for that."
"Don't be, I shouldn't have said that. My relationships were ruined because they didn't measure up. They didn't have that thing, what ever it was that we had."
"I figured you would have been married with children by now. I always imagined you as a great dad."
"So what is your excuse? You have you never married."
"It's easy to say that it was my busy schedule and being away for long periods of time, but that would be lying." Samara felt tears well up in her eyes. "The truth is I was looking for you."
Travis moved closer to her and put his arm around her. He kissed her forehead gently while he shushed her tears. "We are no longer those silly little kids." He lifted her chin and softly kissed her lips. She smiled slightly. "Get dressed. I have something to show you."
He left the room quickly leaving Samara wondering what he was up to. She quickly dressed and met him outside. "Come on." He said." Lets get going."
They made small talk as they drove to his house. Once there he ran and opened the garage door. She followed him inside; he was beaming like he had some great secret. He moved to a car underneath a tarp and asked. " Do you know what this is?"
"No?"
With that he pulled back the tarp. "Taaaa daaaa" Sitting there before her was his old blue Firebird. She laughed when she saw it. It brought back so many wonderful memories of their nights together. They must have spent half that summer driving around and staring up at the stars through the roof.
"I can't believe you kept it!"
"Kept it? Are you kidding me? I tracked this baby down for ten years!"
"You did? Why?"
"Well at one point I figured it was time to sell it but I always had regrets. I always said that if I ever had any money I'd get her back and restore her. I've been working on her for the past two years now. You know I always considered that summer with you to be one of my best and this car always reminded me of that."
He took out the panels in the T-bar roof and opened the door for Samara to get inside. "You are taking the roof out at night? Won't we be cold?"
"It's a beautiful night. You'll be fine. What's the matter you too prissy to mess up your hair?"
"Oh please! If you only knew the crap I've been in, both figuratively and literally."
The two laughed like little kids as they hit the road. Travis drove them to a secluded spot they used to visit. It was their number one parking site. Tonight they didn't make out instead they leaned the seats back in the car and stared out the roof at the stars. They talked for hours on end about the past, their present, and the future. It was wonderful as if every earlier tension was a bad dream. As if seventeen years hadn't passed at all. At one point Samara looked over at him while he spoke. She just watched his lips move and his eyes light up while he told his stories. In that moment she knew she was still in love with him, or just as in love with him as she ever had been. She leaned over and put her head on his chest. She closed her eyes and imagined it was seventeen years ago and she never left.
Not long after they drove back to Travis's house. He took her hand and led her up the stairs. He pulled her through the bedroom and into the en suite bathroom. He started pulling his cloths off tugging hers along the way. Then he stepped into the shower and invited her in. She didn't need much coaxing and quickly undressed. The warm water soothed her skin and her mind. They wrapped their arms around each other and began kissing. At first it was gentle and delicate but it quickly escalated into two tongues entangled in an elaborate passionate dance. She wanted him so badly and she could see that his body was telling her that he wanted her too.
He turned off the shower and wrapped her in a fluffy towel. They didn't use any words to communicate instead they let their bodies and touches do the talking. He guided her to bed and pulled back the sheets she slipped in on the bed and he joined her. Travis moved over her and began kissing her along her jaw line, from there he moved down to her neck and shoulder. His gentle kisses made her shiver but he never stopped. He moved lower now covering her breasts with his delicate kisses. She giggled as he kissed her sensitive belly. She raised her legs up in anticipation as he continued to kiss her lower abdomen. Finally he reached her engorged sex, his skilled tongue caressed every delicate fold. Samara writhed beneath him anxious to show him that she too had acquired new skills.
"Wait." She said her voice hoarse. She sat up forcing him to stop his sensual work. She moved to try and take him in her mouth but he stopped her. Instead he turned around and laid her back down. He then straddled her offering his hard sex. Without a word he went on with his assault with his tongue. Samara looked up at his swollen sex and couldn't wait to wrap her mouth around it. It was hard to concentrate with his mouth giving her so much pleasure. Finally she leaned up and began sucking his hard head. She moved herself a little higher to accommodate more of him. Her mouth glided easily over his hard shaft. The more excited she became from his licks the harder and more enthusiastic her sucking became. She pushed and pulled her mouth back and forth with a determination to cause Travis to explode. Travis had the upper hand though and with a few well placed hard licks and sucks he sent Samara spiraling over ecstasies edge. She came in a loud moan when she opened her mouth wider to moan he took the opportunity to push himself deeper inside. He then got up and stood by the side of the bed. Samara was determined to finish him off and sat on the edge. She pulled his hips towards her and took him back into her mouth. She worked him hard enjoying the strained look on his face. He looked down at her and he could see that she really wanted it; that was enough for him and he exploded in a heady rush that made him slightly lose his balance. Samara held tight to him waiting for every drop of his seed to spill into her.
Travis collapsed on the bed next to Samara and they continued kissing. It wasn't long before Travis was willing to go. Samara pulled herself on top of him and straddled his sex. She took him in her hand and used his firm head to stroke herself. Travis watched in awe as she took charge of his body and used him for her pleasure. Finally she pushed his throbbing head inside of her ever so slightly. She pulled away again only to stroke herself once more. She continued the tease working her way down his shaft each time taking him just a little deeper. The tease was making him insane and he didn't think he could stand it if she did it once more. Finally her tease was over and she settled all the way down on him. Travis sighed with relief; the tease was far too intense. Finally she settled on a rhythm and for a while Travis just enjoyed it. Then Samara surprised him again when she stopped suddenly and planted her feet firmly on either side of him; she then opened her legs wide and began to stroke herself with her long delicate fingers. Travis was surprised by such an intimate display but he found it incredibility erotic.
Travis could take no more of this teasing; he drew his legs up and bounced Samara out of her trance. She fell forward catching herself with her hands on his chest. He continued to thrust from below. He then leaned in and began fondling her breasts with his hands and then his mouth. Samara cried out she came easily completely under Travis's spell. He sat up and pulled her towards him. He then maneuvered himself to be on top of her. He wasn't done with her yet and continued to thrust her deeply. Samara was begging him to stop because it felt too intense. It was his turn to do the teasing and he relentlessly pushed himself into her again and again causing her to come multiple times. Samara had no idea it could be like this. She knew she and Travis had a remarkable chemistry but this was more than she bargained for. Finally Travis's body betrayed him and he found himself coming. He leaned back and screamed out as the forceful orgasm left his body leaving him feeling euphoric and spent.
Travis collapsed next to Samara and they held each other tightly. "That was amazing." She said.
"You didn't do too badly yourself."
"I always knew you were good, but I definitely think you have gotten much better than I remembered."
Travis laughed "I guess we all get better with age."
The two of them feeling spent slept peacefully together. Periodically through out the night and well into the morning they would wake make love and return to their dream filled bliss. Samara felt more in love than ever and wondered if Travis was feeling the same.
The sun bathed Samara in a waking soothing light. She slowly opened her eyes and turned to face Travis. Instead she found herself alone in the bed. She sat up quickly listening for any sound but there was nothing. She quickly dressed and headed downstairs the smell of fresh coffee led her to the kitchen. On the refrigerator was a note. Going to solve a mystery, have some breakfast...I'll be back. Samara wondered where he was gone. She helped herself to some coffee and found a comfy spot on the sofa and waited for him to return.
Travis walked into his uncle's house. His uncle was awake and sitting at the table with the morning paper in hand. "Hey Travis! This is a nice surprise this morning."
"It might not be so nice after you find out why I'm here."
"Why? What's going on?"
"I have something to ask you."
"You look a little pale. You feeling okay?"
"I'm fine." I just have to ask you something." Travis stalled for a long minute trying to figure out what he wanted to ask.
"Well come on out with it. You didn't come over here to just stare at me."
Travis took a deep breath and asked. "Did you ever see any letters in the mail from Samara?"
"That was a long time ago, why are you asking about that now?"
"Just answer the question. Did you or did you not see letters from Samara."
"Look Travis let me explain."
"So you did have something to do with it. "
"Before you fly off the handle here just let me explain."
"I'm listening."
"You were so young and really tangled up with that girl."
"Tangled up with? Jesus we were in love!"
"You were kids! What the hell did you know of love?"
"That wasn't for you to decide now was it?"
"Look when your parents died I promised to take care of you. You had plans. You were going to go up north and get some real experience. Now look where it got you. You came back and started your own construction company. Look at you now a self made man."
"What the hell did that have to do with me and Samara?"
"You were like a little puppy following her around. She would have fucked up your future. You would have followed her instead of following your dreams."
"My dreams? What the hell did you know about my dreams? Did it ever occur to you that she was a part of them?"
"Sure it did but you were so young. I knew you would get over it."
"I'd get over it? You have watched me go through countless relationships ending in disaster. Want to know why?"
"I don't know why."
"Because I couldn't forget her! Because I still wanted Samara, that no matter who I was with or who wanted to be with me I couldn't forget her. I couldn't stop loving her. I still love her."
Travis's uncle hung his head. He cleared his throat. "I didn't think it would affect your life like it has. I thought you would eventually move on."
"How did you pull it off? How did you intercept our letters?"
"Well getting hers were easy because I got the mail everyday. There were times you were home when she called but I wouldn't tell you."
"How did you get the letters I wrote her? How did you even know I'd sent them?"
"Remember Mary Lawrence?"
"The woman you dated?"
"Yeah well she worked sorting mail. She helped me get them."
"Jesus Christ! I can't believe you would do something like that! What were you thinking?"
"I was thinking of you! That is all I was thinking of. Look you had been on a rocky road and going nowhere fast. I wanted you to make something of yourself. I wanted to give you the best possible chance and I thought that leaving her behind would get you on a solid path towards your future."
"I can't believe you did this. I really don't know what to say." Travis turned to leave. His uncle called after him but he didn't respond. He went to his truck and headed home to Samara.
Once home he joined her on the sofa. He grabbed her hand but only stared off into the distance. "Are you okay?" She asked with concern in her voice. Travis went on to tell her the story of how his uncle purposely set out to tear them apart. Samara sat there shocked by the story she was hearing. They held each other for comfort but soon found themselves interrupted. They heard a car pull into the driveway. Travis got up and went to the door. His uncle was coming towards him with a box in his hand.
"Travis I know you probably hate me right now but I love you like my own son. It was wrong and I knew it was wrong. I wanted to tell you the truth but I never knew how. As the years went on I didn't think it mattered anymore. I was prepared to take my secret to the grave." With that he handed Travis a dusty shoebox. He turned and got in his car. He looked forlornly at Travis and drove away.
"What is it? Called Samara."
"I don't know?" Travis opened the box and was shocked to find all of their old letters. It really sunk in now that Samara hadn't abandoned him and that the things they felt then were very real. He felt like crying but instead he swallowed the lump in his throat. The two of them pulled their letters from the box. They spent the rest of the day and well into the evening reading their letters out loud to each other.
For the next week they were inseparable they spent every possible moment together reliving their pasts and exploring each other's bodies. It was so much more than Samara had ever hoped for. The letters seemed to melt away any time between them. Their feelings grew stronger with each passing moment.
Samara was reading through her email when reality took a swat at her happy homecoming. The network had an assignment for her and wanted her to leave immediately. She felt the familiar anxiety and excitement and hurried to pack her things. She wondered how she would say goodbye to Travis this time. Would he wait for her to return? How long would she be gone? Should she stay? So many questions raced though her mind.
Samara was lost in thought when the phone rang. It was Travis.
"Hey babe."
"Travis, I'm so glad you called I have something I need to tell you."
"Well it will have to wait a little longer. I was calling to tell you that I wouldn't be home until late. There has been a bit of a snag on one of the buildings we have been working on and I have to smooth things over."
"Okay well when do you expect to get back?"
"I'm not sure. I'll call you when I'm on my way home."
"Great hopefully we will get a little." CLICK the phone went dead. Samara was scheduled on a flight for ten with the two-hour drive she needed to leave by seven in case there were any problems. Plus with extra security you couldn't be too sure. She picked up the phone and dialed Travis's cell phone. She was immediately connected to his voice mail. She left a message but knew if he were busy she probably wouldn't hear from him on time.
Samara had the car packed and was ready to go; she impatiently watched traffic. She remained hopeful that Travis would get there before she had to leave. She had left a dozen messages on his voice mail hoping he would get to her on time. Finally the phone rang. "Travis thank God you called."
"I got your messages is everything okay?"
"No it's not okay. I have to leave shortly."
"Leave? Where are you headed?"
"On assignment. The network called this morning. I'm afraid my vacation has ended."
Travis's heart sank; he thought he would get sick. He didn't want her to go, he didn't like the idea of her being in danger. "How long?"
"I have no idea. They scheduled a flight for me tonight for Europe and after that I'll meet up with some contacts and we are heading to Afghanistan."
Travis fought back tears. "Do you really have to go?"
"There have been so many deaths in the Canadian military there lately. It's become a hotspot of activity. It's important I cover the story."
"Can't they send someone else?"
"Travis this is what I do. I don't want them to send someone else."
"What time do you leave?"
"At seven."
"Jesus it's almost six thirty now!"
"I know I know I tried to tell you earlier. I've been trying to reach you all day. How far away are you?"
"About fifteen minutes. Let me get off this phone and I'll try and make it faster."
"Okay I'll see you shortly."
Samara paced up and down her parents driveway. She looked at her watch it was twenty to seven. She had all but given up when Travis came roaring into the driveway. He immediately grabbed her and threw his arms around her. With tears in her eyes she looked up at him. "I'm so sorry that it happened so suddenly."
"It's okay, it isn't your fault. I want to ask you something."
"What?"
"Stay."
"I can't stay and you know it."
"Why not? Do you love me or not?"
"That isn't the issue here. I have a job I have responsibilities. People are counting on me."
"What about us?"
"I'll come back to you I promise and I'll write to you every day. I have email too so we can stay in touch."
"Will it take another seventeen years?"
"No of course not. Travis I love you! I want to be back with you."
"If you want to be with me then please stay." Tears welled up in his eyes. He feared that if she left him now she would never return. He thought of every romantic tragedy and how they all ended in disaster. Isn't that how this would go? Maybe she would get hurt out there or killed. He couldn't bear the thought. "Please Samara I really don't want you to go."
Samara hung her head to hide her tears. "Don't worry about me. I've done this a thousand times. I'm going to be fine and before you know it I'll be right back here with you." Samara looked at the time it was already five after seven. "I have to go, I can't be late."
Travis didn't speak he just shook his head in agreement. He gave her one last kiss mumbled an I love you and walked back to his truck. Samara got on board her car and backed past Travis. She watched him in her rear view mirror until he disappeared out of sight. Tears stung her eyes and blurred her vision. She talked herself into staying composed and continued on to the airport.
The trip to the airport was an emotional roller coaster. One minute she was crying in another she was angry that she had to leave. She didn't understand why this all had to happen now. Why couldn't she have had more time with Travis; She even humored the thought that maybe if she had more time that she wouldn't want to leave at all. Finally she arrived at the airport and she turned in her rental. She made her way to the checkout counter to pick up her tickets. They asked for Id and she rummaged through her bag to find it. When she did she felt the soft fur of her travel companion. She bit her lip to stop it from quivering and finally she pulled out her passport. Her mind twisted and contorted a dozen different scenarios but none of them seemed plausible at the moment. She had to go and that was that.
She made her way through security and found her gate. She took a seat overlooking the runways. She watched planes come and go; inside she felt numb. Her flight was called but she didn't move. People filed past her heading for the gate. A final boarding call was made but Samara felt too weak to move. She picked up her cell phone and made a call.
"Hello?"
"Roger it's me Samara."
"Are you on your way?"
"No, no I'm not."
"Well you better get your ass on a flight tonight!"
"I'm sorry Roger I just can't do it."
"What do you mean you can't do it?"
"I'm not going."
"Jesus Samara you have to go. You can't just bail on us at the last minute."
"I don't mean to bail on you, its just that something has come up."
"It better be awfully God damn important for you to be willing to blow your career on it."
"It's important to me."
"You know you are trashing your reputation. No one is going to hire someone who flakes off at the last minute. This is really going to set back your career, if you even have a career after this little stunt."
" I don't care about that. Goodbye Roger." With that she ended the call.
She made her way back through the airport and to the car rental agent. She wasted no time heading back towards home. She drove as fast as the narrow roads would allow anxious to let Travis know she chose him. It was well after one when she pulled into his driveway. The deck was lit but there were no lights on inside. She let herself in and quietly crept up the stairs. Travis was not asleep he had been lying awake in the dark. When he heard the creak of the stairs it startled him and he got up to see what it was. He got as far as his bedroom door when he saw her standing there.
"What happen?"
"I couldn't leave. I tried I really did, but my heart wouldn't let me." She fell into his arms and he covered her face and lips with hungry kisses. They clung to each other desperately for a few minutes before she spoke again.
"I'm never going to leave you again. I made that mistake seventeen years ago."
"I love you Samara."
"I love you too."
Finally Travis led her towards the bed as he helped her remove some of her clothing. He pulled out one of his cotton shirts and she wore it as a makeshift nightdress. He pulled her into bed and they both sank down into the inviting bedding. They were both mentally exhausted and the only thing on their mind was sleep. Travis had so many questions but for the moment he didn't need to hear the answers he only had to hold Samara in his arms. They spooned together in the bed and drifted off to sleep.
The dawn broke with soft light flooding the room, birds sang to greet the day gently waking Samara from her sleep. She slowly opened her eyes and looked around the room. It really happened she thought, I quit my job and I'm here with Travis. She rolled over to face him but he was still sleeping peacefully. She watched him for a moment while he slept. She thought she might have regrets but that is not what she was feeling. Instead she felt as if a great burden had been lifted. She felt like she was exactly where she needed to be. She reached over and carefully rubbed her fingers through his hair. Travis was startled by her touch and opened his eyes suddenly.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you."
"Not a problem, waking up to you is easy." He leaned over and kissed her softly.
"Hummm I like the way you say good morning."
"I'm not finished yet."
"Is that right?"
With that Travis wrapped himself around her and began kissing her with more conviction. Travis always did know how to push my buttons she thought as she found herself becoming more aroused with each kiss. Travis moaned and got up to remove his underwear. Samara squirmed out of her panties while she waited for his return. He pulled himself on top of her and she quickly opened her legs to invite him inside. Travis entered her slowly and sweetly. It wasn't the hot passionate rush of their last sessions but it filled her with a comfortable contentment. She raised her hips off the bed to meet his long slow strokes. He kissed her and kept telling her how good she felt. This soft gentle style was not what she was expecting from Travis but she found it to her liking.
"Can we start everyday like this?" She asked.
Travis laughed. "I'll see what I can do for you. Geesh you have only been here a day and already making demands."
"There are just some things I'm not willing to compromise on."
"I'll always be up to the challenge." Realizing what he said they both burst into laughter. "Now you are laughing at me."
"I'm not laughing at you, just with you."
"Good thing."
"Really? Why is that?"
"I'll show you."
He reached down and grabbed Samaras buttocks. He began to thrust with more vigor and speed. The extra tension his hands were causing was sending Samara over the edge quickly. She arched her back and pushed her head deep into the pillow as she cried out in pleasure. Travis kept his pace and soon he joined her in a slow burning rush of ecstasy. He collapsed on top of her growing soft inside of her. They just held each other cooing at one in another in the afterglow. They both jumped when the alarm clock went off. Travis moaned.
"That's my cue. Time to get ready for work." He sighed as he pulled himself out of Samara unhappy that he had to leave. He kissed her quickly and hit the shower. Samara sank back down in the bed while she listened to Travis in the shower. Soon he was rushing around the room putting clothes on for work. He stopped to give her a quick kiss before he headed down the stairs. "Get some rest." He shouted as he headed for the door.
Samara pulled the covers around her and tried to close her eyes. She felt the cotton shirt she was wearing and already she missed him. It smells like him she thought she tried to sleep but she felt too wired. She got out of bed and headed outside to the rented car. She pulled her suitcase out and lugged it into the house. She went back and grabbed her camera bag, laptop, and carry-on. Once inside she looked for something to wear, she quickly decided and headed for the shower.
Samara grabbed her camera bag and headed outside. It was a beautiful morning. She couldn't remember feeling this relaxed for a very long time. She sat on the edge of the dock and let her feet dangle over the water. The fresh air filled her lungs and she couldn't remember feeling any happier. She pulled her camera from the bag and began taking pictures of the lake. She was surprised when her cell phone rang. She pulled it out of the bag quickly as if by instinct. "Hello."
"Samara?"
The hair on the back of her neck stood on end. It was Roger. What would he want now? "Yes it's me."
"So listen if you still want to go to Afghanistan you can catch the flight tonight at eight."
"So what happen to me being a flake?"
"Come on give me a break. You know I'm not the most level headed and diplomatic person when I'm under pressure."
"Is that some sort of apology?"
"You are really going to bust my balls on this one aren't you?"
"You deserve it."
"Well we need you back and you know it as well as I do."
Samara thought for a moment before she replied. "Roger you have been great and so has everyone at the network..."
"Do I hear a but coming?"
"Yeah you do."
"I'm not going to like this am I?"
"Probably not but I'm hoping you will be happy for me."
"So what is it? What has taken you from us?"
"You know it isn't any one thing. Lately I'd been feeling a little like my life was missing something...and I think I've found it."
"Can I talk you out of it?"
"I don't think so."
"Would a raise do it?"
"No not this time."
"Listen Samara I am sorry for yesterday. I'm also sorry to see you go."
"There has to be at least twenty young hotshots gunning for my job."
"Yeah but they lack your spunk kiddo."
"You will have them jumping through hoops with your tough love."
"You know that isn't the real me right?"
"Yeah we all joke about your bark being worse than your bite."
"Really? Who else has said that? I'm going to go shake their tree."
Samara couldn't contain her laughter. "I'll never tell."
"Then I'm going to go give them all a blast of shit."
"You do that."
"I guess I should let you go. If you change your mind give me a ring. Anytime. Okay?"
"I will, take care."
The phone went dead and Samara sighed she really did it, she quit her job. She got up with her camera in hand and began photographing the tiny wildflowers that grew on the bank by the lake. There was this secure feeling all around her and she knew she was doing the right thing. If there were any doubts at all they were far behind her and she beamed with happiness. She occupied her time with visits to her family and more photos. She was surprised to find it was nearly time for Travis to return home. She made it back to his place and took a seat on the patio and stretched out enjoying what was left of the day. It wasn't long before Travis pulled in his arms laden with bags.
"What's all this?" She asked.
"Well I realized that my kitchen is far from stocked. Being a bachelor and all I spent most meal times at local restaurants. After I left I felt bad because I realized that you probably didn't have anything to eat for breakfast."
" I was fine. I'm resourceful you know."
Travis put the bags down and threw his arms around her. "So what did you do? Catch some fish for you dinner?"
Samara laughed. "I'm smarter than that baby. I went to moms and had lunch."
"My God all that and brains too. I brought take out!"
"Oooh! I like your thinking."
The two sat on the patio enjoying their dinner while they discussed their day. Finally Samara told Travis about the call from Roger.
"So have you changed your mind?"
"Why would you think that?"
"I don't know. I mean you had this whole other exciting life and I wonder sometimes if this will be enough for you."
"I'll find something to do, don't worry about me."
"It isn't that Samara I'm worried that you will become bored and unhappy."
"Travis to be perfectly honest with you I had been considering leaving my job for a really long time. It was tiring and stressful. I can't even begin to tell you how many close calls I've had. It gets to you after a while. I mean here you are in some foreign country where nothing is in your control. There were parts of it I loved but there were parts of it I hated."
"Still this is a big change."
"I'm a very lucky person. I had a wonderful career but it is no longer what I want."
"Well what do you want?"
"You know when I got here the other day I had forgotten how beautiful it was. I have so many of my best memories wrapped up in this place. I think about my parents and how they are getting older. They won't be with me forever and I don't want to miss out on their golden years. Lindsey is here and soon she will start a family and I don't want to be an aunt the kids just hear about but never really know."
"No regrets?"
"Honestly none."
"So what about us?"
"Well I see marriage, babies, and a happy life."
"Just like that? Boy you move fast."
"You taught me well."
"Lets see how fast you really are." With that Travis got up and began running toward the dock peeling off clothing as he went. Samara sat watching in disbelief with her mouth hanging open. Travis naked now took a leap and plunged into the water. "Well?" He called as he treaded water.
"We just ate. Shouldn't we wait?"
"Oh my God I don't believe what I'm hearing here. You can dodge gunfire yet you are afraid to swim after eating?"
"I'm okay, really. I'm fine with watching you." She slumped comfortably into her chair. Travis climbed the ladder and ran across the deck as fast as he could. He tugged Samara out of her seat while she fought against him. He pulled her into his arms and ran back down the deck. "NO!" She screamed as he leapt off the deck and into the cool water below. They splashed and played in the water for a few minutes but it wasn't long before the play got more serious.
Travis pulled Samaras shirt over her head and gave it a fling toward the deck. She undid her bra and swam towards the deck and placed it carefully on top. Travis swam up behind her and pulled her away. She turned to face him and they began kissing. She caught the ladder with her hand and held it to gain some stability. Seeing his chance Travis went for her shorts. She let her legs float to the surface so he could remove her shorts with ease. He peeled the wet material from her body then pushed himself between her legs. With her arms still holding the ladder and floating on her back Travis had her where he wanted her. He greedily sucked and licked at her sex. He used her legs to steady himself as he continued his pleasure assault. The weightless bliss and excitement over the risky local made Samara more excitable than usual and she found herself coming quickly. Travis sensed her impending orgasm and stopped the action. He pushed her closer to the ladder and her legs fell beneath the water. He pulled himself towards her and pushed his hard manhood inside of her. The cool water did nothing to satisfy their lust and they continued to make love.
In the distance Samara heard a boat and panicked. She pulled away and tried to scoot up the ladder. Travis only laughed as she scrambled onto the deck. Samara grabbed at her clothing and used it to cover herself.
"It isn't funny Travis I don't want anyone to see us!"
"Considering that boat was there before we started they may have already had an eyeful."
"You are kidding right?"
Travis laughed even harder at her sudden modesty. He shook his head as he pulled himself out of the water. "Samara they are so far away they couldn't see a thing."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive."
"You do this a lot then?"
"Well no." He looked down at his semi erect state and moaned.
"Don't worry baby I know how to fix that." Samara led Travis over to the patio chairs and pushed him into the seat. She then knelt between his legs and began using her breasts to stroke his hardening sex. She wrapped her breasts around him snuggly and when his head broke through the top she pulled it into her mouth. Travis was moaning and squirming uncontrollably. He was loving every moment of it. It wasn't long before he found himself ready to come. He came unexpectedly all over Samara's ample breasts. She pulled herself into his arms and kissed him gently.
The last light of the day was slipping away from them. A chill filled the air so they took things inside and followed it with a warm shower. They curled up together on the sofa as they wound down for the evening.
"So now that you have quit your job what will you do? I'm not saying you have to work or anything because I'm able to support you."
"I don't need you to support me."
"I didn't mean it like that. I meant that if you didn't want to work then it isn't a problem. I'm more concerned with you becoming bored or unhappy. I couldn't bear that. I want you to be happy here. Here with me."
"I have some ideas."
"Well?"
"I'm not ready to share them just yet. I'm going to work on it tomorrow and let you know something then."
The couple eventually headed to bed and spent a night content in one another's arms. When morning came Samara bounded out of bed and began emailing people and making calls. Travis was intrigued by her sudden action and he longed to know her plans. So much so that he was tempted to stay home.
"So Samara who have you been calling this early in the morning?"
"I will tell you later! Now go to work I have a lot to do."
"I think I will stay home and keep you company today."
"Travis! You will do no such thing! Meet me for dinner at seven in the hotel dining room."
"The hotel? Must be a big occasion."
"Well I'm not sure yet but I think we will have something to celebrate."
"Come on! Don't leave me hanging!"
"You will know soon enough. Now go to work and I will see you tonight!"
Reluctantly Travis went to work. Once he left Samara really got to work on her latest project. She was so excited and couldn't wait to share the news with him that evening. The rest of the day sped by for her as he worked frantically sending emails and references to friends and acquaintances. Finally she heard back from an old coworker. It was set and she found herself a job that made her happy and excited about work again.
Just before six she began to prepare to meet Travis. She had a little presentation made on her laptop and couldn't wait to show him. She ran to the store and bought herself a sexy but elegant dress for the evening. She went to the hotel and sat patiently for him to arrive. She ordered a bottle of champagne and left it chilling until he arrived.
Travis arrived on time and joined Samara. He was impressed with the champagne and the way she looked. "So are you going to tell me what this is all about?"
"Okay." Travis could tell that Samara was bursting with excitement. She pulled out the laptop and played the presentation. It was a man standing in front of some exotic building in the middle of China. He was going on about it and talking about his experiences there.
"I don't get it? Are you going to China?"
"Well maybe."
"Okay I'm still not following you."
"I spoke with Francine I used to work with her at the network. She was a producer and left to begin her own company."
"Well what does she do?"
"She produces travel videos."
"Travel videos?"
"Yeah some are for television and others are for various travel companies to entice travelers. She had suggested the job to me just after she got up and running but I wasn't ready."
"So what will you be doing exactly?"
"I'll be traveling to exotic locations and experiencing their culture. Camera crews will follow me and I'll also help write the scripted parts and pick where and what we will shoot. I will have to find a lot of unique and interesting places that tourist might like to visit and showcase them in the videos."
"Wow it all sounds very exciting." Travis was feeling crushed. He was just getting used to the idea of her being around. He wanted to tell her that he didn't want her to leave him but he didn't want to disappoint her.
Samara could sense something in him but wasn't sure what it was. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. So when will you start?"
"My first assignment is in Bali three weeks from now."
"So soon?"
"I have something else to tell you."
Travis felt ill and wondered what she would say next. "What?" he asked fearing the answer.
"You are going with me."
"What! How can I go with you?"
"Well Travis you can take the time off. You do have a lot of people working for you who can man the ship so to speak."
"Well yeah but I've always taken care of things."
"Well maybe it is time to loosen the reigns a little. I'm sure Jason would love the opportunity to do more."
Travis thought for a moment. "Yeah I guess you are right." He had often thought of retiring but he loved the business. Maybe this would be a good way to start. He was excited about the prospect of traveling and learning new things with Samara next to him. "So we are we headed to Bali?"
"That's right!"
"Wow that sounds great. I've never been anywhere like that before."
"Well get your passport it will be here faster than you think. We will meet a camera crew there three weeks from tomorrow."
"Wow that is so fast. I don't even know what to say."
"Say you are happy and that you will make a wonderful travel companion."
Travis laughed and kissed her. "I'll be the best damn travel partner ever. I come with special benefits you know."
Samara reached under the table and gave his manhood a little squeeze. "Oh I know you do." They both laughed. The rest of the evening flew by with the two of them making plans and excitingly talking about their upcoming adventure.
The three weeks passed by so quickly and they soon found themselves on a plane. Once arriving in Bali they did the typical tourist things, they took a trip on a yacht, trips to the beautiful waterfalls, and even elephant rides. They had such a wonderful time. Samara had one surprise up her sleeve that Travis was unaware of. Travis met her for breakfast by the pool in the resort. He was just settling in to enjoy his food when he was distracted by a group of people headed towards him. When he looked up he realized it was their friends and family. "What's going on? He asked Looking at Samara for an answer.
"Today is a special day." She gave him a huge mischievous smile. "Travis will you marry me?"
"What?" Travis was surprised to hear it. He had thought about it quite frequently as of late but her proposal was a surprise. "When?"
"Well I've invited our friends and family here to help us celebrate."
"Here? Now? You want to get married now?"
"Why not?"
"I don't' know. I mean it is sudden. I thought I'd have more time to plan and things. I haven't even bought you a ring."
"Well will you or won't you?"
"I will, of course I will."
It was dusk when everything was finally ready. Torches lit the flower-strewn path that led to an arbor covered in wildflowers. The heady smell of Jasmine filled the air. Small children dressed in traditional Balinese costumes scattered petals at Samaras feet as she headed towards her nervous groom. The foreign music and sounds of the surf created a surreal atmosphere. This is it she thought; the wedding she always dreamed about. She walked past her friends and family and felt a wave of emotion. She wasn't sure what it was but it was a sense of contentment she had not felt before. Finally she reached Travis and he smiled at her as he took her hands. They said their vows and finally they kissed as husband and wife. Samara melted in his arms. Finally she thought, finally her life was complete.
The End.
